Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals, or EDC’s are all around us!

Why should we be concerned? Because, the average person has over 200 foreign chemicals in their body at any time. These chemicals disrupt the normal function of neurotransmitters, hormone triggers and much more!

The result of this disruption from EDC’s is visible in the rise of autoimmune diseases, weight gain, fatigue, erectile dysfunction, hair loss and many more.

This is especially important for individuals with Thyroid problems!

Thyroid hormone is a metabolic hormone secreted by the thyroid gland that regulates temperature, metabolism and cerebral function. It contributes to energy levels and temperature regulation and body warmth. It increases fat breakdown, resulting in weight loss as well as lower cholesterol. It protects against cardiovascular disease and improves cerebral metabolism, and it helps to prevent cognitive and memory impairment. Thyroid hormone is probably the safest and most beneficial cholesterol- lowering agent, yet it is infrequently used for this! More than any other hormone, the thyroid hormone is most responsible for improvement in energy and reducing fatigue.

So what can you do to maintain hormonal balance and free your body of these disruptive chemicals?

-Eat Organic – they may cost a little more, but are worth the benefit

-Wash your foods to remove chemicals – pesticides and waxes are often present

-Avoid microwaving in plastic containers – use glass whenever possible

-Store foods, especially hot foods in glass containers

-Use personal care products without EDC’s – examples include fluoride and phthalates

We cover more detail in this video:

So you live clean, avoid EDC’s and still have health concerns?

Even with careful control over our environment, decent nutrition and exercise, we still cannot avoid the decline of our hormones. Sometimes it simply comes from aging, other times it comes earlier than expected due to genetics or a traumatic event. The place to start looking for answers is with lab work.

What labs do we look for with our patients? Our comprehensive hormone lab testing is anything but cursory. We look for a lot more information because the studies show us the importance of looking beyond the one or two values of deficient hormones to more precisely treat someone. In the case of thyroid, we look at these five tests:

  • TSH
  • Free T3
  • Free T4
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid Peroxidase Abs
